Skin Hydration
Water is essential for the human body. Your body consists of about 60 -70% water and adequate hydration is required to carry out essential functions necessary for survival.
Your skins tissue is made up of cells which require water to function properly. As we age our skin slows the production of many beneficial substances that naturally help keep your face hydrated.
Ceramides are lipids (fat) which form the skin’s natural moisture barrier and protect it from the external environment. As we age, our skin’s barrier may be compromised or become weak due to the natural decrease of ceramide (fat) production. This often results in skin dehydration, roughness, wrinkles, and sensitivity. Hydration is vital for all individuals and as you age, treating your skin with an extra dose of hydration can be beneficial.
WHAT HAPPENS TO DEHYDRATED SKIN?
Dehydrated skin occurs when there is a lack of the water in the skin and can often happen to anyone regardless of their skin type. When our skin is lacking moisture or water it starts to become dry, flaky and is often more prone to wrinkles and fine lines due to shrinkage of the cells in the top layer of the skin.
Dry and flaking cells do not reflect light as well as healthy hydrated cells often causing the skin to look dull and rough.
In comparison, when your skin is more hydrated it will feel and appear more supple, plump, and healthy.
HOW CAN HYDRATION EFFECT YOUR SKIN?
- Eliminates toxins – Staying hydrated helps your body to flush out toxins including harmful toxins that can affect your over all health as well as skin problems.
- Fine lines and wrinkles – Water keeps your body hydrated and maintains the skins elasticity making your skin appear plump and smooth.
- Oil production – Dehydrated skin can often produce more oil because it is compensating for a lack of moisture in the skin.
